(Insert your opinion here)

I'm not sure if these commercials are shown in the States, but there's a whole series of them with a variety of 'outcomes', shown here.

I have my own opinion about these commercials, what is yours? I'll update this at some point tomorrow with my take on it. Please give your honest opinion, and don't be swayed by other comments that you may read. If you want to leave an anonymous comment, go ahead.

Can't say I'm thrilled with the idea of a daughter being traded for an exotic dead animal!

On the other hand I LOVED "I see dead ladybugs" on rumor queen

I have never seen that commercial, and I am glad.

A stuffed rodent is as valuable as a daughter? It is also a terrible portrayal of a culture and its beliefs. Sad.

Racist, derogatory towards women, hmmnn downright offensive. I just don't "get" the humour - it makes EVERYONE in it look silly and ridiculous.
Just my opinion.

I've never seen this on TV. I'm hoping it's a made up spoof with someones sick mind instead of a real commercial.
Now I can see why I get the "so they throw their daughters away in China" comments.

Bizarre and ridiculous.

The use of the word "exotic" in the context of Asian culture (or any non-Anglo culture) is enough to get me riled up. And then there's the rest of it. Total xenophobia shining through.

(Can I say, though, that Tandoori chips sound kinda yummy, in and of themselves?)

Okay. I posted a comment. The commercial caused brain damage and I didn't have anything meaningful to say. I watched that train wreck again and have something constructive to mention.

Whomever made that commercial did some research and watched some movies from Bollywood. They have some stylistic and thematic elements from popular Bollywood movies. Now, that being done, the commercial still sucks. Unless Canada has moved to the Indian Subcontinent, I'm guessing the target market of these chips is not exclusively Indian in origin. Indians who watch Bollywood movies (which suck by the way...) might get the stylistic joke. Most people would not.

The commercial also fails because the joke just isn't funny; it falls flat. The nature of the joke is mean spirited so it denies itself from the inspiration.

Instead of finding real merit in the flavoring of the chip, we're contemplating the absurdity (or perhaps annoyance or outrage) of an otter for a wife. The view might be left with the impression: "Indians are stupid, they'd trade a daughter for an otter...but they sure have good tasting food."

There are probably better ways to use the same style without the esoteric theme. And certainly remove that joke.

Besides all that, the ad does one thing: it reminds you about the brand and the product...

I've seen these commercials (not this particular one, mind you - yikes) and I'm not a fan. I think I have a pretty good sense of humour, but I just don't find these funny. I see why they're supposed to be funny, but I don't get it. I'm not tremendously offended by them, but just don't like them
